Nietzsche and Socrates

Explore the profound impact of Nietzsche and Socrates, two of the most influential figures in Western philosophy. This course delves into the contrasting approaches to ethics championed by these thinkers, offering a fascinating look at the foundations of moral thought.

Allan Bloom famously posited that Socrates and Nietzsche represent fundamental alternatives in ethical frameworks. Socrates believed humans are rational beings, and the core purpose of philosophy is to attain knowledge of the good life. He sought objective truths about virtue and morality.

In stark contrast, Nietzsche argued that such objective knowledge of the "good life" is an illusion. Instead, ethics, for Nietzsche, centers on values – expressions of personal commitment and creative power, rather than immutable truths. His philosophy emphasizes individual will and the creation of meaning.

This course provides an in-depth examination of the ideas of Nietzsche and Socrates, two philosophers who have shaped Western civilization. We will analyze their core concepts and their enduring relevance to contemporary ethical debates.
