What is Icon Painting?

Icon painting is more than just art; it’s a meditative and prayerful art form steeped in tradition. Every element – from the materials used to the final image – carries symbolic meaning. The creation of an icon is a gathering of God's creation, utilizing natural materials like wood, gilding, paints, and oils.

A key aspect of icon art is the representation of figures in a way that emphasizes their holiness and divine nature, rather than focusing on their human characteristics. Icon painting adheres to specific rules of composition and color to reinforce the underlying theological message. Almost every element within an icon is deeply symbolic.

To help you get started, I've included a downloadable PDF detailing the materials I use and a comprehensive list of everything you'll need to create the two icons featured in this course. Discover the secrets to creating powerful and spiritually enriching icon art!
