A purely Japanese perspective might only explain Japan's opening to trade as a result of Perry's visit and the need to end its isolationist policies. However, with global history knowledge, you can understand the broader context:

• The Mexican-American War: The US victory in this war sparked a gold rush and shifted interest westward across the continent towards the Pacific.
