TOEFL Exam: Your Guide to English Proficiency & College Admissions
The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a globally recognized assessment of English language proficiency at the college level. Accepted by over 6,000 colleges, government organizations, and businesses worldwide, the TOEFL serves a crucial role in the admissions process for international students. Similar to the SAT and ACT, universities utilize TOEFL scores as a factor alongside GPA, class rank, recommendations, and extracurricular activities. While not required for native English speakers, the TOEFL is essential for non-native English speakers seeking admission to universities in English-speaking countries. Many major universities accept and even require the TOEFL for international applicants.
About the TOEFL & ETS
Since 1964, the Educational Testing Service (ETS) has designed and administered the TOEFL. As a private, non-profit organization, ETS directly reports official scores to universities. The TOEFL is one of the two leading English proficiency tests (alongside the IELTS), widely accepted globally.

What Happens During the TOEFL Test?
TOEFL tests are administered at authorized ETS testing centers. Expect to spend 4-5 hours at the center. Arrive at least 30 minutes early to check in and present your ID. The first two sections (Reading and Listening) take 120-170 minutes, followed by a 10-minute break. The final two sections (Speaking and Writing) follow. You can take notes during the Speaking and Writing sections, but cannot communicate with other test-takers.
Eligibility Requirements
All test-takers must present a valid, government-issued ID with a recent photo. Students under 18 should bring a parent or guardian, and those 15 or younger must have both themselves and their parent/guardian present with valid ID.
TOEFL Scores & Interpretation
Each section is scored out of 30, resulting in a total score out of 120. Speaking and writing tasks are scored on a scale of 0-4 (speaking) or 0-5 (writing). The average TOEFL score internationally is around 82. Universities set varying minimum acceptable scores, with graduate programs typically requiring higher scores. A score of 94 or higher places you in the top 25% of test-takers.
