Bridging the Digital Divide: Essential Tech Skills for Seniors
In today's world, the digital and physical realms are increasingly intertwined. However, many individuals, particularly aging adults, struggle to stay connected. This comprehensive four-part course offers accessible training designed to empower seniors and those lacking technological skills to confidently participate in their digital communities.
This program addresses the growing digital gap, a challenge amplified by events like the COVID-19 pandemic. Many older adults desire to engage with online communities but feel intimidated by technology. They may even have created digital accounts but aren't fully utilizing the available resources due to a lack of know-how.
Consider these statistics: According to the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA), nearly 3 out of 4 Canadians spend 3-4 hours online daily. Positive online experiences hinge on ease of use; negative experiences can lead to exclusion. Adults aged 55+ are increasingly using mobile devices to access the internet, with usage skyrocketing from 24% to 57% between 2015 and 2019 and continuing to grow.
This rapid technological advancement, coupled with increased online activity, can leave older adults feeling left behind. As Shengzhi Wang notes, "Older adults are experts in their lived experiences and can identify the potential barriers to technology adoption and use.”
This age-friendly workshop provides fundamental instruction in:
- Devices: Learn to use desktops, mobile phones, and tablets effectively.
- Email & Apps: Master email communication and essential app functionality.
- Websites & Internet: Navigate the internet with confidence and find the information you need.
- Social Networks: Connect with friends and family through social media platforms.
