Speedy Art Classes: 6 Tips for a Visually Striking Portfolio

Are you a budding illustrator looking to launch your career? Or perhaps a seasoned book illustrator aiming to land bigger, better projects? This guide, from professional book illustrator Memo, will help you create a standout illustration portfolio.

Memo, based in Turin, Italy, has worked with major brands like Disney, Lucky Charms, and Dungeons & Dragons since 2017. His own journey began with a carefully curated first illustration folio, and he's distilled years of experience and feedback into these essential tips.

Here's how to build an effective illustration portfolio:

• Plan Your Folio: Consider a unifying theme to showcase your range and create a cohesive narrative.
• Keep it Concise: Focus on your strongest pieces – less is often more.
• Find Inspiration: Analyze popular TV series, movies, and cross-media projects for fresh ideas.
• Analyze Trends: Visit bookstores and photograph popular children's books to understand current color palettes and styles.
• Balance Style & Versatility: Demonstrate consistent artistic style while showcasing your ability to adapt to different project needs.
