A solution is a homogeneous mixture where substances are thoroughly blended, making individual components invisible. The substance being dissolved is the solute, while the substance doing the dissolving is the solvent. Understanding these key components is fundamental to chemistry!
Solubility is a crucial concept. It refers to the maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in 100 grams of solvent at a specific temperature to form a saturated solution. A saturated solution holds the maximum possible amount of solute at that temperature. Solutions with less solute than the saturation point are called unsaturated, while solutions containing more solute than can normally dissolve are termed supersaturated solutions.
Solutions can involve any state of matter – gas, liquid, or solid – acting as either the solvent or the solute. There are nine main types of binary solutions based on these combinations. However, the most common and significant solutions are those in the liquid phase. These are broadly categorized into:
- Solid in Liquid Solutions: Think of salt dissolving in water.
- Liquid in Liquid Solutions: Like alcohol mixing with another alcohol.
- Gas in Liquid Solutions: Such as carbon dioxide dissolving in water to create carbonated drinks.
