What is SLA (Stereolithography)?

SLA is a highly accurate and stable 3D printing technology that uses a laser to cure liquid resin, building parts layer by layer. This process, called photopolymerization, creates solid objects from a liquid resin. SLA is one of the most precise 3D printing methods available. There are two main types of SLA:

  • Laser-based SLA: The traditional SLA method.
  • Projection-based DLP (Digital Light Processing): A variation using a projector to cure the resin.

How Does SLA Printing Work?

SLA technology utilizes a focused ultraviolet (UV) laser beam to selectively harden areas of liquid photopolymer resin. The resin is initially in a liquid state at room temperature. The laser traces the cross-section of each layer, solidifying the resin. After each layer is completed, the build platform lowers slightly, allowing a fresh layer of resin to flow in. Once all layers are cured, the finished part is removed from the resin vat. Support structures are automatically generated to hold overhanging parts during printing and are later removed. Specialized photo-polymers are used as the raw material in stereolithography.
