Redox Reactions
Master oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions! Learn the fundamentals, applications, and importance in chemistry. Perfect for students and enthusiasts.
Course Content
Redox Reactions is an all-levels Udemy course taught by Vinay Arya. It runs 3h 28m, is taught in English, and includes a certificate of completion. 3 students have enrolled. It is a paid course, first published October 2021.
Redox reactions are fundamental chemical processes where oxidation and reduction happen together. Simply put, adding oxygen to a substance is oxidation, while removing hydrogen is reduction. Understanding these concepts is crucial in chemistry.
Electronic Concepts of Oxidation and Reduction
- Oxidation: This is the process where an atom or ion loses one or more electrons.
- Reduction: Conversely, reduction is when an atom or ion gains one or more electrons.
Understanding Redox Reactions
Redox reactions are essentially electron transfer reactions. Electrons move from one reactant to another. The substance that loses electrons is termed the reducing agent or reductant, and the substance that accepts electrons is called the oxidizing agent or oxidant.
Redox Reactions in Aqueous Solutions
In water-based solutions, redox reactions can occur directly or indirectly.
Direct Redox Reactions
These are reactions where oxidation and reduction occur in the same container. The electron transfer happens over a very short distance, typically within molecular diameters.
Example: Zinc and Copper Sulfate
Consider placing a zinc rod into a solution of copper sulfate. A spontaneous redox reaction will occur, with the following observable changes:
- The zinc rod gradually dissolves, losing mass.
- The blue color of the copper sulfate solution fades.
- Copper metal deposits on the zinc rod or settles at the bottom of the beaker.
- The reaction releases heat (exothermic).
- The overall solution remains electrically neutral.
- The reaction will eventually stop as the reactants are consumed.
