What are pentatonics? They are five-note scales derived from the major scale, specifically omitting the 4th and 7th degrees. This omission creates a unique characteristic: the absence of a tritone. The tritone is crucial because it forms the foundation of the powerful dominant to tonic progression. The V7 to I progression is arguably the strongest resolution in music, but pentatonics don’t naturally "resolve" in the same way. This presents a challenge for improvisers.

Many improvisers rely on pentatonics for speed, but the real skill lies in using them musically and meaningfully. This course teaches you to play pentatonics slowly and melodically – a challenging but essential skill for expressive playing.
