Overcoming Perfectionism in your Painting

Feeling stuck in a rut with your paintings? This Skillshare class is designed to help you overcome perfectionism and unlock a more expressive artistic style. Learn three painting methods to loosen up and move beyond rigid, overly detailed work.

This course focuses on painting subjects rooted in reality – think people, places, and objects – and guides you to express yourself with intuition, gesture, and a playful approach. Whether you're a beginner or have some experience, you'll discover techniques to break free from the trap of endless revisions.

In this class, you will learn:

• Understanding Perfectionism in Art: Explore how perfectionism manifests in your art practice and its impact on your creative process.
• Three Playful Painting Techniques: Discover three distinct, hands-on methods to approach your subjects with more freedom and spontaneity. These are techniques you can adapt to future paintings.
• Intuitive Painting Exercises: Develop your ability to paint from feeling and observation, rather than solely from meticulous planning.

This class is suitable for all skill levels of painters. While I'll be demonstrating using acrylic gouache paint, the techniques are easily adaptable to any opaque paint – including acrylics and oils.

While the focus is on representational art, you'll also find opportunities to experiment with abstract elements and infuse your work with unique flair.

Materials Needed: Your preferred paint medium. Opaque paints (acrylic, oil, or gouache) will yield the best results for the exercises.
