Dive into the world of oil paint and cold wax painting! This class is perfect for artists looking to explore a unique and versatile medium. We'll focus on creating charming small landscape paintings using the delightful combination of oil paint mixed with cold wax.
Learn my preferred art supplies and techniques for achieving a beautiful, matte finish that dries faster than traditional oil paints. This creamy mixture spreads easily, allowing for creative tool application – think frosting for your canvas!
This class is for you if:
- You're eager to learn new art techniques.
- You're interested in creating small landscape art.
- You enjoy experimenting with art supplies.
- You love watching and learning from the painting process.
Essential Supplies:
- Arches Oil Paper: My go-to surface for oil painting and cold wax pieces. Note: If using watercolor paper, gesso priming is required before using oil paints.
- Silicone Bowl Scrapers: I recommend Messermeister (Amazon/kitchen stores) or Catalyst (art stores). These are great for mixing and applying your paint.
- Palette Knives: Both plastic and metal options will be used for various effects.
- Oil Paints: Choose colors you love from a brand that fits your budget. A curated selection is perfect for beginners.
- Gamblin Cold Wax Medium: The cold wax medium I'll be using in class. Dorlands is another popular brand to explore.
- Mark-Making Tools: Get creative with different tools!
- Painter's Tape: Use painter's tape (not masking tape) for clean edges.
- Gloves: Disposable gloves are essential for easy cleanup.
- Shop Towels/Paper Towels: For wiping and cleaning.
- Disposable Paint Palette: For easy paint mixing.
Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and experiment with color! You don't need a vast palette to start. Color mixing is a fun skill to develop. I'll be using a variety of colors and brands in class to inspire you. I typically focus on small landscape painting to help you master the fundamentals of oil paint and cold wax before tackling larger projects. Stay tuned for a future class on working with cradled board!
