Nutrition for Oral Health in the early years

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework has recently updated its welfare requirements to emphasize promoting good oral health in children. This new addition highlights the importance of a holistic approach, extending beyond basic brushing and dental check-ups.

This guidance, while well-intentioned, can be somewhat open to interpretation. Good oral health in early years settings is significantly influenced by early nutritional habits, which play a crucial role in overall childhood development and can shape lifelong health patterns. The habits formed during these formative years can impact everything from dietary preferences to potential health concerns later in life.

This course delves into the nutritional influences that directly support dental health in young children. We’ll explore a comprehensive understanding of what contributes to a healthy mouth, going beyond simply focusing on calcium intake. You'll gain practical insights into specific food types that are beneficial (and those to limit) for optimal oral health.

Understanding the impact of early nutrition is vital, as these early habits profoundly shape a child’s relationship with food and contribute significantly to their overall health journey. As educators and caregivers, you have a pivotal role to play in fostering healthy habits and helping to shape the health of an entire generation. Remember, adult health and habits are often formed in childhood. Learn how to make a difference!
