Quickstep: Master the Lively Ballroom Dance
Discover the joy of the Quickstep, a dynamic and exhilarating ballroom dance! Often described as "Beschwingt übers Parkett" (lightly gliding across the floor), the Quickstep is a sophisticated and energetic dance that showcases impressive jumps and flowing movements. A good Quickstep dancer exhibits a light, almost effortless quality while maintaining a graceful upper body line.
The Quickstep is an advanced variation of the Foxtrot. While often paired together in social settings (like balls!), they require distinct approaches. Although you can dance both, the Quickstep’s faster tempo necessitates adjustments. Don't confuse it with Slow Foxtrot (also known as Foxtrot in English).
Key Characteristics of the Quickstep:
- Flott Füße, ruhiger Oberlinie: Fast feet combined with a controlled upper body.
- Rapid, Controlled Movement: Characterized by quick, flowing steps.
- Dynamic Tempo: A blend of fast and slow rhythms, creating a sense of lightness and joy.
- 4/4 Time Signature: Typically danced at 50-52 measures per minute.
- A Swing Dance: Shares similarities with other Standard dances like the Slow Waltz, Viennese Waltz, and Slow Foxtrot. The Tango stands out as the only step dance within the Standard category.
- Popular Standard Dance: A core component of the World Dance Program, enjoyed globally.
Quickstep vs. Foxtrot: What's the Difference?
The distinction between Quickstep and Foxtrot is evident in the basic step, technique, posture, and tempo. While Foxtrot typically involves 3-4 figures, the Quickstep offers a vast array of possibilities.
