Introduction to Philosophy (with Plato's Apology)

Delve into the timeless wisdom of Socrates with an exploration of his powerful Apology. This course examines the trial of the renowned philosopher, focusing on the core of the accusations against him – not just legal charges, but his very way of life.

Discover how Socrates passionately defends his philosophy, revealing that the pursuit of truth is a lifelong, sometimes dangerous, endeavor. More than a personal defense, Socrates offers a profound defense of philosophy itself. He challenges the citizens of Athens – and, by extension, you – to critically examine your own lives and values.

Through meticulous reasoning, Socrates demonstrates the importance of intellectual honesty and unwavering commitment to truth, regardless of the consequences. This isn't just a study of ancient philosophy; it's an invitation to embrace courageous truth-seeking and cultivate the spirit of a true philosopher.

This course utilizes the version of Plato's Apology found in Plato: Five Dialogues, translated by G. M. A Grube, 2nd edition (recommended, though other versions are readily available online). To maximize your learning, it's highly recommended to read the entire dialogue alongside the lectures. However, you can still gain valuable insights by listening to the lectures and completing the accompanying quizzes. Prepare to be inspired to follow Socrates on a journey of self-discovery and intellectual bravery.
