Holistic Pet Bird Care

It's rare to truly start from the beginning – unlike in fairytales or gripping murder mysteries! But when it comes to understanding and caring for birds, especially hookbills, it's crucial to challenge ingrained human expectations. For centuries, we've struggled to meet the needs of these intelligent creatures.

The journey of bird keeping began around the mid-15th century with the gifting of the first parakeet to Alexander the Great, now known as the Alexandrine parakeet. Yet, after 600 years of captive bird care, are we any closer to truly understanding them? Many birds still exhibit signs of stress and frustration.

We often unintentionally disrupt their natural rhythms by altering their light cycles. We feed them pellets, a food source with no historical precedent in their rainforest habitats. And we place their bird cages in front of large windows, assuming they're enjoying the view, while they may actually be terrified of predators like hawks, unable to comprehend the concept of glass.

Birdcage housing isn't simply a matter of following a checklist; it's a fundamental environmental decision. Even seemingly harmless birdcage accessories can be surprisingly complex, mirroring the challenges of understanding the 600+ species of hookbills we're compelled to bring into captivity.

Before even considering a bird as a companion (we don't sell them!), I always ask potential owners about their feelings towards vacuuming. If you dislike vacuuming, a bird is likely not the right pet for you!

This course offers holistic solutions and real-time strategies for improving bird welfare. It will require dedication and effort on your part. Think of it as a roadmap to a better understanding of bird care.
