The Viking Age in Ireland marks a significant period of history, beginning with the arrival of raiding parties on Ireland's east coast in 795 AD. For two decades, Ireland faced relentless attacks from these Norse seafarers, driven by the pursuit of wealth and slaves. These raids devastated island monasteries and coastal settlements, leaving a lasting impact on the island's cultural and economic landscape.

By the 1820s, the Vikings possessed a comprehensive understanding of Ireland – its language, political structure, military capabilities, agricultural possibilities, and geography. This knowledge paved the way for serious considerations of a full-scale invasion and settlement, which commenced in the 830s.

The period from the 830s to the 870s represents the first major opportunity for the Vikings to potentially conquer Ireland and establish a lasting colony. However, the Irish people mounted a determined resistance, with local chieftains often taking the lead in defending their lands. As internal power struggles for the title of High King emerged in Ireland, the nature of the resistance evolved.

The arrival of the Danes in the 850s led to their control of Dublin. However, this dominance was short-lived, as the Norwegians eventually reclaimed the city through a counter-attack. The 870s saw the Norsemen experience a period of internal conflict, with the loss of key leaders triggering twenty years of civil war for control of the Irish colony.

This internal strife proved to be a turning point. The Irish, revitalized by the Vikings' weakened state, launched a concerted effort to expel them. After a period of Viking infighting, the Irish successfully ousted the Norse from all their bases, culminating in the recapture of Dublin in 902 AD. This marked the end of the Viking presence in Ireland and a pivotal moment in Irish history.
