Gritty Newsprint Effect in Adobe Photoshop

Unleash Vintage Charm: Create Gritty Halftone Effects in Photoshop

Do you love the look of old newspapers and vintage posters? Capture that distinctive, gritty aesthetic created by halftone patterns and classic printing techniques in your digital work. In this class, I'll show you how to replicate this old-school character in your photographs, graphics, and typography using Adobe Photoshop smart filters.

I'm Dominic Righini-Brand, and I'll share a creative approach to styling images, moving beyond the standard halftone effect. We'll focus on experimental styling to give your designs a unique, print-based feel.

This course utilizes non-destructive smart filters and adjustments, allowing for easy application and tweaking on any image or graphic. You'll learn to stylize:

• Photographs: Perfect for portrait photography, documentary photography, and sports photography, adding a vintage touch.
• Images with Tonal Range: Transform pencil drawings, found images, and prints with a textured effect.
• Typography & Lettering: Create compelling calligraphic compositions, lettering, and typographic designs.
• Solid Color Graphics: Add depth and character to vector illustrations and solid color graphics.

By the end of this class, you will be able to:

• Build a newsprint effect for images in Photoshop.
• Create a newsprint effect for type and vector graphics.
• Colorize images and graphics with these effects applied.
• Quickly apply these effects to a variety of images and graphics.

This technique is designed for Adobe Photoshop CC and should also work with CS5 & CS6 versions (though not officially tested).
