Greek traditional dance "Zeibekiko"

Discover the captivating world of Zeibekiko, a deeply rooted Greek and Cypriot folk dance with a rich history! Originating from Asia Minor (Constantinople and Smyrna), the name itself connects to the Zeybeks, an independent militia group of the region. Traditionally danced by two men or a man and a woman, Zeibekiko carries a poignant story.

Following the Asia Minor catastrophe of 1922, refugees settling in Athens and Piraeus established taverns called "tekedes," where the dance evolved to be performed primarily by solo male dancers. Today, you'll find a beautiful variety of participants – both men and women – embracing this expressive art form.
