Exploring Skies and Clouds with Watercolor

Unlock the secrets to breathtaking watercolor skies and clouds! This class dives deep into the essential role of water in creating stunning effects with watercolor paints. Learn to harness the power of flow and movement to bring vibrant pigments to life on various paper surfaces – wet on wet, wet on damp, and wet on dry techniques.

We'll explore the necessary watercolor painting materials, including high-quality Arches 300 GSM Cold Pressed paper (recommended for optimal results in sizes 15x30cm, 19x14cm, and 19x28cm), a range of watercolor paints (Silver, Black, Velvet Size 4, 6 & 8), and versatile wash brushes or flat brushes (Princeton 1.5 inch, 1 inch, and .5 inch). Don't forget masking tape (1 inch and .5 inch) for clean edges!

Beyond techniques, we'll cover supportive elements to enhance your compositions, such as incorporating mountains or hills, adding birds (focusing on shapes and sizes), and utilizing fields for perspective.

Exercises will build your skills with:

• The Clear Blue Sky: Master painting angular clouds with light and incorporating green grassland for balanced compositions.
• The Gradient Sky: Experiment with color blending and background washes to create beautiful, multi-hued skies.
• The Sunset Sky: Learn a loose, quick painting style to capture the essence of a sunset evening.

Throughout the course, you'll complete three class projects, progressing from simpler to more complex. Two projects will focus on layering techniques and adding elements like birds. The final, more challenging project will involve dramatic lighting, multiple colors, and creating a complete landscape with mountains, fields, and more. Detailed project instructions are available in the dedicated Project section.
