Understanding Steel Behavior: A Deep Dive into Mechanical Properties

This course delves into the behavior of steel, focusing on the crucial stress-strain curve and how it's used to determine key mechanical properties. We'll explore the tensile test, a fundamental method where a steel specimen is subjected to tension, allowing us to measure the resulting stress and elongation.

Decoding the Stress-Strain Curve

The stress-strain curve of steel reveals its response to applied force. It exhibits distinct phases:

  • Elastic Phase: Initially, the material behaves elastically. Deformations are reversible and proportional to the applied stress, following Hooke's Law. The Young's modulus (E) for steel is approximately 210 GPa.
  • Plastic Phase: Beyond the elastic limit, irreversible deformations occur. These can be substantial (several percent). A key characteristic is strain hardening (also known as work hardening). If the material is unloaded and then stressed again, it behaves as if its yield strength is equal to the maximum stress reached during the initial loading. Strain hardening is a technique used to increase the yield strength of steels.
  • Necking/Striculation Phase: Prior to fracture, a necking or striction phase appears. This occurs when strain hardening can no longer compensate for the increased stress caused by a reduction in cross-sectional area. This unstable phenomenon concentrates deformation in a localized region, leading to a significant reduction in section and ultimately, fracture.

Compression Behavior

The compression behavior of steel mirrors its tensile behavior, exhibiting a symmetrical response to compressive forces. Understanding these phases is essential for various engineering applications and material selection processes.
