Dynamic programming is a powerful technique used in both mathematical optimization and computer programming to solve complex problems. Developed by Richard Bellman in the 1950s, it has broad applications across diverse fields, including aerospace engineering and economics.

At its core, dynamic programming simplifies intricate challenges by recursively breaking them down into smaller, more manageable sub-problems. While not all decision problems lend themselves to this approach, those involving decisions spanning multiple points in time often do.

A key concept in dynamic programming is optimal substructure. A problem exhibits optimal substructure if an optimal solution can be constructed from optimal solutions to its sub-problems. Furthermore, if sub-problems can be recursively nested within larger problems, making dynamic programming methods applicable, a relationship exists between the value of the overall problem and the values of its sub-problems. This relationship is formally known as the Bellman equation.

In mathematical optimization, dynamic programming simplifies decision-making by dividing it into a series of sequential steps over time. This involves defining a sequence of value functions (V1, V2, ..., Vn), where each function takes a state variable 'y' as input, representing the system's state at time 'i' (from 1 to n). Vn(y) represents the optimal value achieved in state 'y' at the final time 'n'.

The Bellman equation provides the recursive relationship for calculating the earlier value functions (Vi at i = n-1, n-2, ..., 2, 1). These values are computed by working backward, maximizing a function (often a sum) that considers the gain from a decision at time i-1 and the value of the system in the new state resulting from that decision. Because the values of the necessary sub-problems have already been calculated, this process efficiently determines the optimal values for each state.

Finally, the optimal values for the decision variables can be traced back through the calculations to determine the overall optimal solution. This makes dynamic programming an invaluable tool for solving a wide range of optimization problems.
