What is Pattern Making?

Pattern making, also known as pattern cutting or pattern drafting, is the process of creating garment patterns from fashion drawings. A pattern is a paper or cardboard template used to trace garment pieces onto fabric before cutting and assembling. A custom-fitted basic pattern, or sloper (for home sewers) or block (for industrial production), is a pre-made template for creating various garment styles.

The flat-pattern method starts with a sloper or block, a basic pattern based on body measurements. This block is refined through toile (muslin) mock-up garments. The final block is then used to create patterns for different necklines, sleeves, dart designs, and garment shapes.

The Role of a Pattern Maker:

A pattern maker creates a prototype, similar to a garment design, for testing. They use inexpensive fabric like muslin or toile to create these prototypes. The prototype garment can be adjusted by pinning it to the body or a dress form. The sewer then cuts patterns on the muslin, following the same method as the final garment. These muslin pieces are fit together, and adjustments are made. This provides a guideline for marking and cutting fabric for the finished garment.

By the end of this course, you'll confidently Create, Cut, and Sew a Shoulder-Dart Bodice Pattern Prototype (mockup) accurately and professionally using muslin fabric. Start your journey in pattern making today!
