Discover a unique learning experience based on a real-world Doctoral Capstone Experience! This course chronicles my 14-week journey with Adaptive Sports Iowa (ASI) in Ames, Iowa.
ASI is a fantastic organization dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of individuals with disabilities through diverse sports and recreation programs. With 12 years of prior involvement with ASI, this capstone provided a deeper dive into their impactful work, exposing me to a range of programs I hadn't previously experienced.
The course details my hands-on involvement, including participation in wheelchair basketball – a personal favorite! – alongside contributing to four other programs. Beyond playing, I actively facilitated weekly events and assisted with major fundraiser events.
A key project involved streamlining equipment access. I developed helpful handouts and collaborated with the Iowa Sports Foundation to establish a new, user-friendly equipment lending program, improving the experience for both borrowers and lenders.
This course offers insights into the power of adaptive sports, community engagement, and impactful project management. I'm incredibly grateful to Drake University and Hannah Bowman, Director of Adaptive Sports Iowa, for supporting this meaningful capstone experience. Learn about real-world application of skills and the positive impact of sports for people with disabilities.
