CHEMICAL BONDING-Ionic, Covalent & Coordinate Bonding

Chemical bonding is fundamental to understanding the world around us. It describes the interactions between atoms that create molecules, ions, crystals, and all the substances we encounter daily. Essentially, chemical bonding is the force that holds atoms together.

Atoms bond when their nuclei and electrons arrange themselves in a way that lowers the overall energy. This energy reduction is called the bonding energy. The attractive forces responsible for holding atoms, ions, and molecules together are known as chemical bonds.

The understanding of chemical bonding really took off in the early 20th century, following the discovery of the electron. Interestingly, the type of chemical bond that forms between two atoms can often be predicted using the periodic table. Furthermore, the properties of the resulting substances are often linked to the type of bonding present.

This course dives into the core concepts of chemical bonding, exploring:

• Ionic Bonding: Learn how electrons are transferred between atoms to form ions and ionic compounds.
• Covalent Bonding: Discover how atoms share electrons to create stable molecules.
• Coordinate Bonding: Understand the formation of bonds where one atom provides both the electron pair and the nucleus.
