Get Started with Blender: Your Guide to Edit Mode & 3D Character Modeling
Welcome to the world of Blender! New to 3D modeling? Don't worry, this course will guide you through the fundamentals, focusing on Blender's edit mode, where the magic happens.
Getting Started with Blender
First things first: downloading and installing Blender is straightforward. Head to the official Blender website – you can find the latest version or, if you prefer, previous versions for specific compatibility. (Search "Blender Index of Release(s)" for older versions). On a PC, the file is typically an .msi installer. Blender updates are frequent, but don't fret! The core functionality of edit mode remains remarkably consistent across versions.
Mastering Blender's Edit Mode
This course dives deep into Blender's edit mode, the primary workspace for shaping and manipulating your 3D models. While it contains a vast array of tools and hotkeys, you won't need to learn them all to create your first character. We'll focus on the essential editing tools to build a basic 3D person. Repetition of these basic tools will help build muscle memory and improve your workflow.
Finding the Right Reference Images for 3D Modeling
A crucial step in 3D character creation is finding good reference images. For this course, we'll be using images of a human figure. It's beneficial to find images where the legs are slightly apart, making it easier to model. Here are some effective search terms to use:
- 3d full body turnarounds
- 2d full body turnarounds
- 3d model turnarounds
- turnarounds for 3d modeling
- reference images for 3d character turnarounds
- realistic full body turnarounds
- hand and foot references
Websites like 3d-dot-sk offer a variety of human models and texture packs (be sure to check their credit system). Renderhub is another excellent resource for high-quality textures – you can purchase them directly without needing a credit system. Renderhub's textures are often nude male and female models, but they've recently expanded to include clothed options. We'll be using textures from Renderhub, including models like Anneli, Katy Rose, and Lan. (Purchased December 2023).
Important Note: Always respect copyright and licensing when using 3D assets.
