Understanding and Correctly Writing Hamza in Arabic

Mastering the Arabic letter hamza is crucial for accurate reading and writing. This guide breaks down the different types of hamza and provides clear rules for their correct representation.

Types of Hamza

There are two primary types of hamza:

  • Hamza al-Wasl (Connected Hamza): This hamza appears at the beginning of words that start with a consonant. It's written but not pronounced. You'll find it in:

    • ** الثلاثي Verbs (Three-Letter Verbs):** Examples include: اِلعبْ (il'ab - Play), اُكتُبْ (uktub - Write), اِدرُسْ (idrus - Study), اِجلسْ (ijlis - Sit).
    • ** الخماسي and السداسي Verbs (Five-Letter and Six-Letter Verbs) in Past and Imperative Forms, and their Nouns/Infinitives:** Examples: اِستعفرَ (ista'fara - Ask for forgiveness), اِستغفرْ (istaghfar - Seek forgiveness), اِستغفار (istighfar - Seeking forgiveness), اِستخدمَ (istakhdama - Use), استخدمْ (istakhdim - Use), اِستخدام (istikhdam - Use).
    • Known Nouns: Examples: اِبن (ibn - Son), اِبنة (ibnat - Daughter), اِثنان (ithnan - Two), اِثنتان (ithnatan - Two - feminine), اَيمن الله (aymana Allah - May God grant him success), اَيم الله (aymu Allah - May God grant her success), اِمرؤ (imra' - Man), اِمرأة (imra'a - Woman).
    • The Definite Article "ال" (al): Examples: الكتاب (al-kitab - The book), المعلومة (al-ma'luma - The information).
  • Hamza al-Qat' (Separated Hamza): This hamza is pronounced and written. It can appear either open (ا) or closed (ء). It's found in most words not listed under Hamza al-Wasl. Key rules for Hamza al-Qat' include:

    • Above Alif (ا): When open or doubled (مضمومة - madda), like in أُم (um - Mother), أَقبلَ (aqbala - He came).
    • Below Alif (ا): When closed (مكسورة - maksura), like in إِنّ (inn - Indeed), إِسلام (islam - Islam), إِسعاد (is'ad - Happiness).

Writing Middle Hamza

The hamza in the middle of a word is written based on the dominant vowel sound of the letters surrounding it. The stronger vowel dictates the form:

  • كسرة (Kasra - ّ): If the preceding letter has a kasra.
  • ضمة (Damma - ُ): If the preceding letter has a damma.
  • فتحة (Fatha - ِ): If the preceding letter has a fatha.
  • سكون (Sukoon - ْ): If the preceding letter has a sukoon.

Writing Terminal Hamza

The hamza at the end of a word has specific rules:

  • Matching the Preceding Vowel: If preceded by a consonant, the hamza is written according to the vowel of the preceding consonant. Specifically:
    • ضمة (Damma - ُ): If the preceding consonant is pronounced with a damma.
    • فتحة (Fatha - ِ): If the preceding consonant is pronounced with a fatha.
    • ياء (Ya - ي): If the preceding consonant is pronounced with a kasra. (e.g., يجرُؤ (yajru' - He dares), يبدَأ (yabda' - He begins), يستهزِئ (yastahzi' - He mocks)).
  • Isolated on a Line: If preceded by a silent consonant (ساكن - sakin), like in *جزْء (juz'
